As of Wednesday, 22nd July 2026, Google has officially launched AI Overview and AI Mode in France (Aperçus IA et du Mode IA). French users conducting Google searches will now see AI-summarised answers at the top of their search results for informational queries. They’ll also have the option to continue their search in AI Mode, fundamentally changing how people interact with search results.
Google AI Roll-Out in the EU
France was the last major Western European market to receive Google’s AI Overview feature. Belgium, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Austria, Poland, Spain, and Switzerland all got access back in March 2025. The delay? Stricter regulations in France, particularly around data privacy and AI transparency requirements that needed to be addressed before rollout.
This staggered approach shows Google’s cautious navigation of the EU’s regulatory landscape, but now that France is online, the entire Western European market is live.
What Does This Mean for Brands Operating in France?
Expect clicks to drop. That’s the realistic expectation.
With AI Overviews dominating the SERP, user behaviour is shifting dramatically. Users no longer need to click through to your website to get answers to their questions. Google’s AI serves them a summarised response right at the top, and for many queries, that’s enough.
This means brands need to fundamentally rethink their success metrics. Traditional click-through rates will become less reliable as a KPI. Instead, you need to start tracking visibility, are you being cited in AI Overviews? Is your content being used as a source?
The focus should shift to:
- Creating authoritative, well-structured content that AI systems can easily parse and cite
- Optimising for featured snippet positions, which often feed into AI Overviews
- Building brand recognition so users click through even when they have an answer
The game hasn’t changed entirely, but the rules certainly have. Brands that adapt quickly to this new SERP landscape will maintain their competitive edge in the French market.
