We’ve conducted extensive research into how search on ChatGPT works. One of the major gaps in data we currently have is key phrase data. What are users searching on ChatGPT? What topics? How many searches? Brand or non-brand key phrases?
There is currently no key phrase tool for ChatGPT, trends data or paid advertising platform where you can gain insights.
However, recently, a new autocomplete feature was added for logged-in ChatGPT users. This was bundled with the announcement of shopping listings on the platform.
These autocomplete key phrases are the first data set from the platform that allows us to get some insights into what is being searched for or requested on the platform.

We asked OpenAI where the phrases in their autocomplete come from.
To address your question about autocomplete phrases, these are typically generated based on a combination of factors. They can include commonly asked questions, popular topics, and phrases that have been identified as useful or relevant based on user interactions. This list is dynamically generated and updated to reflect the evolving interests and needs of users. It’s designed to help users quickly find answers or explore topics of interest. – OpenAI support
More on this later, as you will see some phrases are…. questionable.
The report below contains data from ChatGPT’s autocomplete. We’ve built a script that allows us to pull this for our clients in an automated method.
The data below is based on.
- 142 seed phrases, e.g. “how can I”
- Selection of 1 word, 2, 3, 4 and 5 phrases
- For each, we can ask for a maximum of 4 autocompletions.
- 1,273 phrases in the data set
- English only
- Logged in – autocomplete only works with a logged-in account
- Not all seed key phrases we asked for generated an autocomplete
There are no relevant key phrases to my product/brand/industry?
This first set of data is based on a rather generic seed list, e.g. “how can” “what is”.
If you are interested in getting data on your product etc, follow me on LinkedIn and message me with some seed phrases (ask ChatGPT to create some if you don’t have them already). I’ll then run them in the tool and add them to the above table.
How can I use this list of key phrases?
I would use this as any other autocomplete data, it can help you build ideas for topics and content to publish on your site, to then be used by ChatGPT in their training and search results.
Is this really what people are searching for on ChatGPT?
Having a look at this list, there are some phrases which logically make sense.
Seed phrase – which one should I choose?
- Which one should I choose for my next vacation destination?
- Which one should I choose for my vacation destination next month?
- Which one should I choose for a new hobby to try?
- Which one should I choose for my next book to read?
This could mean that the autocomplete is using some LLM, e.g. is the seed phrase being sent to the LLM for it to complete?
